I have discovered that I represent an interesting group of birds. There are only 2 families of owls, typical owls and barn owls. There are over 200 species of owls. Only 18 of those species are in the barn owl family.
I am a Western Barn Owl. We are the only type of barn owls found in North America and Europe.
If you are trying to see one of us, here is what to look for:
- Barn owls usually have a heart-shaped facial disc around the eyes.
- When compared to our body size, our eyes are smaller than the eyes of other owls.
- The barn owl beak is larger than the beaks of other owls, when compared to our body size.
- Western barn owls are longer and lighter weight than other barn owls.
This is a photograph of a Western barn owl living in ZooAmerica, Hershey, PA. Isn’t he handsome?
